20+ Year Old Online FPS Game That Is Still Alive!

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to make a quick post about an old fossil we found that is still alive! That fossil is Starsiege: Tribes. We played Tribes around the same time it came out on December 23, 1998. Tribes was a game changer and very ahead of its time. It was fast paced, had jet packs, multiple game modes, a great community, 32 player online play, changeable gear, and a destroyable base! Tribes was a go to game for years. It didn’t have much of a single player, but multiplayer was phenomenal and made the lack of single player completely fine.

After 20 years Tribes is still alive. This should by itself should say how great of a game Tribes is. Recently, out of curiosity, we downloaded it, logged on, and surprisingly, games are still available to join that have people playing in them. Whats even better is that anyone can download it for free and play.

If you have an interest in FPS games, older games, or just want try out one of the first FPS-Z shooters you should check out Starsiege: Tribes by clicking here.

The community is still alive for tribes and you can get involved here.

Tribes 2 community that still looks alive here.

How Do We Create Games?

There is a lot of work that goes in to making games. Some games require more work than others, but any game you want to create will require a great deal of work. There are a lot of options when it comes to creating games. You have plenty of engines and tools to choose from. This can make starting game development a daunting task since you may not know where to even begin. Depending on the type of game you want to make will determine which tools you should learn to use. We want to share with you some of the tools we use to give you a reference and maybe a starting point. Give us a shout on our Contact Page if you have any questions or need any help.

Some Tools We Use:

Unity Engine

Unity is a great engine and can do just about anything we need it to do. Unity support is great and its awesome to have so many assets available and a community that is big and helpful. We recommend checking out Unity and seeing if it will fit your needs for game development.

Blender

Blender is Awesome! We use Blender for 3d models, animation, UV mapping, texturing, Etc, You name it. Blender is a great software for any indie developer and you should check it out!

Gimp

Gimp is an awesome and free alternative to Photoshop. We use gimp for our images, to make textures, make icons, etc. It works great and you should check it out if you need an image editor. We also use MS Paint along side with Gimp.

Audacity

We use audacity for our sounds and audio. It is great for sounds, recordings, editing audio, making tracks. It is a powerful tool and you should check it out if you need to make some audio.

Tools We May Use In The Future:

Godot Engine

We really like the Godot Engine community and it looks like they are actively developing and making it better and better. We plan to use the Godot Engine in the future and think that you should check it out. If you have used the Godot Engine we would love to hear what you think! Give us a shout on our Contact Page

Lunar CyKILLS

Lunar CyKILLS is about a rogue moon that broke bad and decided to destroy all the planets. This moon has lasers and you can use those to shoot planets or you can collide with planets and watch them fracture. This game was made for the Lunar New Year Game Jam. The theme was lunar. At first we were prototyping a game where you are the moon and you have to avoid planets with a pool style mechanic, but this wasn’t as engaging as we liked so we changed it to colliding with planets after we made the planets fracture. This was going well and we we’re making great time. We introduced over 50 new planet variations and you have to avoid meteors as you accelerate faster and faster. This game can be found on Itch.io and it was later ported to Android and is available On Google Play.

Cool Water Blender

This was made in Blender after following this Youtube tutorial. The video is explained very well and I think the results are great. We modified our version just a bit, but we learned a lot in Blender from it and thought it was really cool. Our result is below.

Little bit of water.
